Cotton paper with some serious bite.

Here at Holstee, we have a mission to create the best possible products using sustainable sources, interesting methods, and top-quality materials. We have recently been undergoing some changes in the way we analyze and determine what “best” really means, and plan to incorporate this standard into not only our existing products, but all future products we plan to create and present to you.

With all of this exciting change in mind, we are pleased to announce that through our revised standard of quality and our aim for one-of-a-kind products, we have chosen to integrate a new, cotton paper for the printing of our Manifesto posters.

This paper is made from 100% recycled cotton textile. It is both cholrine and acid free, as well as 100% tree-free, and we are most excited to now use an annually renewable resource that helps keep our precious trees where they belong. Due to this paper’s unique, luxurious feel, it has been deemed the best quality paper for letterpress: it is top of the line quality, sourced in a sustainable, earth-friendly way, all while providing an unparalleled product that has some serious bite. In letterpress, the term “bite” refers to the contrast between the unique texture of the cotton paper and the way that texture beautifully reacts to the physical process of “press.”

Here’s an awesome video that breaks down the step-by-step of letterpress:

Though some would say that letterpress is a dying art, others would disagree: “I think letterpress is going through a revival right now,” says Paul Collier, the letterpress and typography technician at the University of Plymouth, which is one of the few-remaining movable type workshops in the U.K. While the process is undeniably more complex, many would describe letterpress prints as collectible and even timeless. This thought combined with artisan paper makes for an invaluable, frame-worthy product.

Here’s another video that exemplifies a company that uses a Vandercook press (us, too!) and 100% cotton paper:

We thorougly enjoy the artistry and individualism letterpressing creates. We think that to fully appreciate the method and craft behind it, it is best for visual examples of the time and dedication behind what letterpress entails. This, combined with the best paper out there, means you are receiving our best work, a result we will always strive to maintain.
